EFRIS in plain terms: what it means for your invoices

What URA’s electronic receipting system is, who must use it, and the ways a business can connect.

A calculator, a pen and a printed financial statement.

EFRIS stands for the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution. It is the Uganda Revenue Authority’s system for issuing receipts and invoices electronically, so that each sale is recorded with URA at the time it happens.

Who has to use it?

VAT-registered businesses must issue e-receipts and e-invoices through EFRIS. URA can also designate other taxpayers who must use it. If you are not sure whether you are covered, check before you assume you are not: failing to issue EFRIS receipts when they apply to you can attract penalties.

How a business connects

URA offers several ways to issue EFRIS receipts, so a small shop and a large distributor can each use what suits them:

  • The web portal: issue invoices from a browser, suited to low volumes.
  • Desktop or mobile apps provided for EFRIS.
  • Electronic fiscal devices: point-of-sale machines connected to EFRIS.
  • System-to-system integration: your accounting or sales software sends invoices straight to URA.

What to get right from day one

  • Register your goods and services in EFRIS with the right descriptions and tax rates.
  • Keep stock records up to date if you deal in goods.
  • Issue credit notes through the system when you correct an invoice, instead of tearing up a receipt.

We help businesses with EFRIS onboarding and set-up. Get in touch if you need it.
